2008 Bishop's Lenten Appeal Begins
A mailing from Bishop Loverde that begins the 2008 Bishop’s Lenten Appeal will be sent to many of you this week. When you receive the mailing, please review it carefully. The programs, services, and ministries supported by this annual appeal require financial support of each of us in order to continue to meet the challenges of the rapid growth in our area. This year’s BLA theme is, “Led by the Holy Spirit, We Live our Faith and Share our Gifts.” As you reflect on your contribution, please pray for the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Think about the many gifts that God continuously provides to you including the gift of Faith. Consider that your gift will enable the Diocese of Arlington to continue God’s work here in Virginia. Please give your pledge out of gratitude for God’s gifts to you.

Immigration Reform Legislation
A bipartisan group of Senators and Congressmen has introduced legislation, The Secure America and Orderly Immigration Act of 2005, to reform our immigration system. Bishop Gerald R. Barnes, Chairman of the Committee on Migration, US Catholic Conference of Bishops, expressed support for the draft legislation. He believes that it best reflects principles for immigration reform set forth by the US bishops. It would create legal avenues for migrant workers to enter the US in a safe and orderly manner, provide an opportunity for immigrants already here to work toward permanent residency, and provide additional visas for families to be reunited. You can add your voice to that of our bishops by encouraging your elected representatives to support the proposed legislation (S. 1033 in the Senate and H 2330 in the House).
